Faithfulness in Exile

Sermons for a Scattered People

Covid-19 has displaced us from our worship home, upturned certainties of the past, and revealed deep-seated injustices and idolatries in American society. What does the Bible have to say about faithfulness—ours and God’s—in a time such as this?

Although little known by most North American Christians, the biblical literature of the exile—the period when Judah and Jerusalem were conquered by the Babylonian empire and its people forcibly removed from their land—speaks powerfully into our own season of uprootedness. Over seventy days, corresponding to the seventy years of exile prophesied by Jeremiah (29:10), we’ll take an Old Testament journey seeking wisdom for how to grieve, pray, live, and hope in our own contemporary season of exile.

A seventy-day plan for Bible reading is provided for you, starting Monday, September 7 (see below) to complement and better prepare you for the Sunday readings and messages.

In conjunction with Grace’s fall sermon series “Faithfulness in Exile,” take this 70 day Bible reading challenge. It’s a deep dive into the Biblical literature of the exile, when our ancestors in faith were forcibly removed from their land and their worship home by the Babylonian empire (aka the Chaldeans) in the 6th Century BCE—for 70 years! Talk about Scripture for a time when everything is thrown up in the air!

These readings are intended to complement the Sunday preaching texts and themes. On Sunday, September 7th, Pastor Mark will introduce the series with a message on 2 Kings 25:1-12 and Psalm 137. Your 70 Day assignment, should you choose to accept it, begins on Monday, September 7.
